Week 8

Sunday evening found our family all home together once more. There’s a peace which fills me when four little plates are in a row. Something feels complete. Ryan was discharged from the hospital again on Saturday.  A new friend, Jaye, graciously brought over a delicious meal for all to share. Her kindness was another reminder of the gift of community.

As we shared the meal, another new friend we actually met that evening, cousin Cece, came to visit with a sense of loving-kindness that can only be described as refreshing. She sat on the floor with our kids singing about the sweetness of grace. The sound was as beautiful as the message. Sharon was strumming the guitar with cousin Cece while Ryan clapped along from his highchair in delight.  Ryan seems to take in everything about good music. Sweet Ella was already asleep in her bed at 7PM, exhausted from the day. And dear Geoffrey filled my lap. As Micah says, “when you’ve been hugged by Geoffrey, you’ve really been hugged.” Geoffrey leans in and holds on tight and long. This night, as the room was filled with the gift of singing, Geoffrey’s left foot was paining was once again, as sickled cells cruelly clumpled in his foot. “Ouchie” is a newly acquired word for Geoffrey and is unfortunately used almost daily.

The singing continued:

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

Grace has brought. Grace will lead. Deep breath in.

I asked Geoffrey if he wanted to be tied onto my back to be carried around. It is so soothing to him and his brother. Like so many children from all over this world, a mama’s back is a safe, comforting place for Geoffrey. We walked and walked until the pain eased and Geoffrey found respite in sleep.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

We are watching and waiting, taking in the grace that permeates the steps of our story while asking for freedom from the “ouchies.”
